Macular
Degeneration
is a widely prevalent condition in the elderly population which
leads to progressive deterioration of vision and ultimately blindness.
Though extensive research is ongoing and several medications are
being tested, no effective therapy is available in modern medicine
for this condition, at this time.
Recently, acupuncture is reported to be helpful in Macular
Degeneration in a study published in the journal of Medical
Acupuncture. According to this paper, 69% of 108 patients treated
by acupuncture experienced some improvement of vision. The improvement
occurred in both dry and wet variety and regardless of duration
of the illness. Considering the lack of any effective treatment
of this condition at present, the improvement reported appears quite
impressive. I have worked with the physician who was the author
of this study and treated a few patients in his office in New Mexico.
I intend to start treating this condition in my office in Raytown.
